ABOUT OUR HIGH SCHOOL
We have intentionally designed our school to provide a more intimate and personalized setting for students- in dramatic contrast to the many over- crowded high schools in our area. In fact, Bayfront will never have more than 500 students! Still, we offer a full range of UC-approved courses, electives, ASB, and opportunities to participate on 13 separate competitive teams in the Frontier League of the San Diego CIF.
Located just minutes from the J Street Marina and the San Diego Bay, Bayfront Charter High School is housed in a spacious, 30,000 square foot building with 18 classrooms, a theater, cafe, lecture hall, student meeting area, and outdoor recreation facilities. [Some of our recent building improvements can be seen HERE]
Bayfront Charter High School offers teachers a rare opportunity to develop and pioneer innovative curricula in a rapidly evolving, energized, high school setting. We feature a 1:1 laptop program organized around the ISTE standards, and provide teachers with wide discretion in the design and implementation of their courses.
NEW HIGH SCHOOL-- SOLID FOUNDATION
Bayfront opened in 2014, but we are not a new charter school! In fact, Bayfront Charter High School is the high school extension of Mueller Charter School, one of California's original charters-- authorized in 1994. Mueller, which is located within walking distance from Bayfront, is one of our state's most innovative and successful K-8 charter stories. Serving a concentrated population area of low income families, Mueller has focussed on the audacious goal of getting 90% of our students to grade level at the end of each academic year. While we have not yet achieved that mission, we certainly pushed much closer every year. In fact, during the years of the California Standards Test, Mueller improved from 15% of our students being proficient in math and reading in 1999, to nearly 75% proficient by 2013.
Mueller established its middle school in 2006 and began taking 7th and 8th grade students on college visits throughout San Diego and Los Angeles. Over time our enrollment doubled (to 1,100 students!) and our budget tripled. Our two schools work closely, modeling the tremendous potential associated with offering families a K-12 continuum. Both of Bayfront's founding leaders-- Dr. Kevin Riley and Dr. Ryan Santos, have worked at Mueller Charter School since 1999.
