Hello, my name is Safen Mohammed. I am the son of Kurdish refugees. My personal story is what has led me to become an educator. Growing up, my family was traumatized by war and the struggle for survival, leaving everything they knew to a new country with no financial resources. I grew up speaking Kurdish. I felt like an outsider when I first started school. I was confused and isolated by my ignorance of the English language. I had to build relationships with limited language skills. School was my first personal struggle. This led me to want to help other young people to be successful in school and in their lives.
I whole-heartedly believe that every single student can succeed, and that every student deserves a champion. Through my training, educational and personal experiences, I have acquired the knowledge and skills of how to implement systems to help support students, families, and educators. I am excited to collaborate closely with students and families to create an enriching and supportive learning environment for our students. Our shared commitment to our students' success is what makes Bayfront truly special, and I am excited to continue this journey with each and everyone of you! Moreover, here are some facts about me. I was born a year after my parents arrived in the United States. I was born and raised in southeast San Diego. I attended San Diego State University (SDSU) for my undergraduate studies. I received my bachelors degree in Criminal Justice with two minors. I received my first minor in Counseling and Social Change and second minor in Sociology. Following this, I attended SDSU for graduate school and received my masters in Counseling. My favorite hobbies are playing/watching sports, working out at the gym and eating tasty foods. |

Lead School Counselor (Last Names: O-Z) Ms. Addie Honeycutt is thrilled to bring her love of supporting students to Bayfront! Originally from North Carolina, Addie ventured into the cold Midwest to study Psychology at Carleton College in Minnesota. After graduating, she spent a year teaching English in Cuenca, Ecuador, where she was able to play in the Andes and speak lots of Spanish. Upon returning, she moved to California and spent the next six years working in various student-support roles for education non-profits in San Francisco, and as the Admissions & Outreach Coordinator for a San Diego charter school. She then found her true calling and received her Masters in Counseling from SDSU. Addie believes in being persistently curious to help each student identify their own unique strengths. She hopes to provide all of her Bayfront students equitable access to opportunities to find their passion. Mrs. Alexis Ortiz
Community School Coordinator
I am honored to be apart of this family and the founding team of Bayfront Charter High School. I have been apart of the Bayfront community since 2014 and originally started as an English teacher. Although I loved teaching and was thrilled to be in the classroom, I quickly realized that some of our students needed more support outside of the classroom. I knew that in order for our students to be successful in the classroom, their emotional, social, and mental health needs also needed to be met. With this in mind, I decided to go back to school become a School Social Worker to help our students in a different way.
I graduated from the University of Arizona with my degree in English Literature and Creative Writing and then received my Masters in School Social Work from University of Southern California. As the School Social Worker I want to ensure that our students and their families have access to resources within the community to better support themselves and their loved ones.
In my free time I enjoy doing anything outdoors, working out, camping, trying new food spots, and spending time with family!

Mrs. Tianna Adame - Integrated Math III, Pre- Calculus Honors, Calculus Honors
Hi! My name is Tianna Adame. I was born and raised in San Diego and I am so excited to teach Bayfront! I grew up in Chula Vista and went to Otay Ranch High School. After high school, I went to Southwestern Community College for an Associate’s in Mathematics and then got my Bachelor’s in Mathematics at San Diego State University in 2012. Working for a math tutoring center and subbing at various schools, really got me into wanting to teach math. So, I went back to SDSU and had an amazing experience getting my teaching credentials. My love for math started in high school and I had awesome math teachers that supported me and encouraged me to pursue a career in math. I would like to do that for my own students and make math less intimidating and more interesting.
My classroom will always be open for students that want tutoring, a quiet place to study, or just want to talk. My interests include playing video games, reading, doing art, traveling, hanging out with friends and family, and anything geeky or nerdy!

Mrs. Ariel Woolley - Language Arts 10, Journalism
Hi all! I'm Mrs. Woolley and I'm from Denver, Colorado. Originally, I'm a military brat from Germany. I'm so happy to have joined the Bayfront Charter family. I received my BA in Communication Studies from Colorado State University and my MA in Communication Studies from the University of Colorado Denver.
In my spare time, I enjoy being active. My hobbies include running, climbing, hiking, anything with a board, video games, sketching, and spending time with my dogs. Usually, I look for an adventure on the weekends to help me explore my new home.
My teaching reflects my belief that we should feel safe to take risks in the classroom. Using skills-based grading, I create an inclusive space that allows students to learn from their mistakes and take ownership of their learning. I use flexibility with planning to be responsive to the needs of my students. Students who enter my class know that I work to grow them as people, not just in the subject I'm teaching. Ideally, after spending time in my class, students are better able to enter the world as competent and civic-minded adults.
I'm looking forward to a wonderful year with you all!

It exposed me to many different cultures, and allowed me to learn a few languages. Besides teaching, I love reading, traveling, history, trekking, and learning languages.
I have been fortunate to travel to more than 60 countries, and would like to share my passion about archaeology, monuments, and the world with our students. The world is waiting for you to discover it!

Science
Mrs. Darline Bejarano - Biology, AP Biology, Human Anatomy
Hi, I am excited to teach at Bayfront Charter High School. I look forward to being part of the expansion of this wonderful school. I was born and raised in the Imperial Valley, about an hour and a half southeast of San Diego. I earned my degree in biology from UCLA in 2003. I started teaching science in a small school in Southern California in 2003 and fell in love with teaching! I decided to pursue my teaching credential and earned my Masters Degree in Secondary Education from National University in 2006. I moved to Maryland in 2005 and taught a year of biology in Baltimore. It was one of the best experiences ever and I believe it truly made me the teacher I am today. It helped me move away from the traditional teaching style and become more of a hands-on learning type of teacher. I then moved to Tucson, Arizona in 2006 and taught biology to high school students for 8 years. I am now back in California and extremely happy to be back in the classroom!

History / Social Science
Mr. Aaron Carlson - World History, Government, Economics
Hello Sharks! My name is Aaron Carlson and I am thrilled to be teaching Social Science at Bayfront High School. I am originally from a small town called Kingsburg located in the Central Valley. I attended California State University, Fresno where I graduated with a B.A. in History along with my Teaching Credential. Go Bulldogs!! I am very excited to be bringing my experience along with my passion for teaching history to the Bayfront Family.
While I was attending Fresno State, I was involved with an Armenian Youth Organization called Homenetmen whose purpose is to bring young Armenians from around the world together with one mission…playing sports. Being 6’9”, it was only fitting that I would quickly join the basketball team and compete for the Fresno division. Being a part of this organization has made it possible for me to travel the world and play basketball in several different countries. It has been an amazing experience to be able to visit the countries I teach about in my history classes.
As an educator my goal is to do more than just relay information. I plan on taking an active role in expanding my students’ knowledge. I hope to be the history teacher that my students will look up to, even though it's a long way up! There will be many challenges, but my goal is to help guide my students through the rough times and prepare them for many successes in the future.

Mr. Scott Martinson - US History, Guitar
My name is Scott Martinson, I have lived in Chula Vista my entire life! I went to Hilltop High, and am proud to now be teaching in the same city where I was raised! In 2015, I was fortunate enough to accept a substitute job for Linda Libby here at Bayfront. After this experience I was lucky enough to be asked to continue working here, and now I cannot imagine teaching anywhere else!
I attended San Diego State University for my undergraduate and graduate studies. In both programs I studied history, and now have a Masters of Arts in History. For my undergraduate studies I focused on United States History, Nazi Germany, and Holocaust studies. For my Masters work I studied US history, 20th Century British history, and Music history. My Masters thesis focused on British and American Blues music in the late 1950s through the early 1960s, and the trans-Atlantic relationship that was built around Blues music.
I have been a musician since I started playing the guitar when I was 16 years old in 2006, and have been mostly self taught. I now play guitar (Electric and Acoustic), banjo, mandolin, harmonica, and love to pick up any stringed instrument I can! Since my beginnings I have had the pleasure to perform in multiple venues, play a wide range of music, and play with some truly amazing musicians. Though my professional career has focused on the history of music, I have also played professionally. The largest crowd I have ever performed for, with my band “Elia’s Thoughts,” was around 6,000, and have also played for crowds as large as 3 people. All of these experiences have given me true insight into the life of being a musician, and the art of performing.
I am thankful for all the opportunities I have had in music and in my education, and am lucky to have the opportunity to share these experiences with the wonderful students here at Bayfront!

Mr. Kristopher Cawood - World Geography and Social Studies
My name is Kristopher Cawood and I teach 9th grade social studies. I am also the boys varsity basketball coach. I was born in Denver, Colorado where my love for history and basketball first began. Shortly after high school, I joined the United States Air Force. While serving as a medic in the USAF and playing basketball, I had the opportunity to live and travel around Europe extensively. After serving, I moved to Seattle and graduated from the University of Washingtonwith a BA in History. I moved to California in 2009, living in Orange County for two years before heading south to San Diego where I completed my teaching credential program at San Diego State University. I always knew I would end up in San Diego, living the life in the sun!
My passion is helping students realize and achieve both their academic and personal goals. It is important that students are confident in their abilities so they can overcome any challenge that comes their way. I look forward to exploring the ideas and events that have shaped our world with our students.
When I'm not in the classroom or on the court, you'll find me outdoors with my wife, Susie and our three children. As a family, we like to explore together and travel as much as possible.
It’s an honor to be part of the Bayfront family. I know we will continue to do amazing things, together. Go Sharks!

Ms. Yecennia Alaniz - World History & Chicano Studies
Hello everyone :) I am so happy to be part of the Bayfront familia and serve the young people of Chula Vista. It is truly a privilege to continue working for educational reform and preparing our youth to be instrumental agents of change and impact. I love teaching the social sciences because I truly believe that if we learn from the past and humanize the study of history, we can better inform our choices and influences today by understanding the pivotal role individuals and communities play in shaping the world we live in.
A little bit about myself: I grew up in Los Angeles and have always appreciated the diversity and liveliness of the city. I received my teaching credential from California State University Long Beach and served as a full-time teacher in the city of Watts for about 9 years. I love searching for vintage treasures, live music, participating in community events, and volunteering.
I am excited to learn, share, and grow with my students and colleagues this school year :)
