The French 1 course is an introduction to French language. It emphasizes listening, speaking, reading, and writing, while at the same time introducing culture from francophone countries. Students will build a basic vocabulary, and begin to work towards fluency in French. They will participate in short conversations about everyday topics, building confidence in the target language. The French 2 course continues the language learning progress, focusing on listening, speaking, reading, and writing. It also exposes them to culture from other less known francophone countries. Students will continue expanding their French vocabulary, building confidence in the target language. They will initiate or engage in conversations about a greater variety of topics, using different verb tenses. This course will meet the World Language Content Standards for California Public Schools. The Spanish 1 course introduces and builds listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. It also builds comprehension, and conversational skills in Spanish. Therefore it includes language structure, grammar use, comprehension, cultural awareness, and communication strategies. This course introduces students to Spanish history, culture, and language, and its goal is to meet the World Language Content Standards for California Public Schools. The Spanish 2 course continues building listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, while also focusing on cultural aspects. Conversational skills will be emphasized. Students in this course will keep on learning about the language, culture, and history of Spanish speaking countries, including Hispanics in the United States. Basic concepts from Spanish 1 are reviewed, before developing all language skills. The goal is to meet the World Language Content Standards for California Public Schools. The Spanish 3 course continues building listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Students in this course will expand their vocabulary, using it in appropriate conversation settings. Students will use a variety of verb tenses. All three modes of communication (Interpersonal, Interpretive, and Presentational) defined in the Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century are addressed. This is the first course intended for native Spanish speakers with varying degrees of exposure to their native language. It focuses on developing academic vocabulary, learning grammar and spelling of high frequency words, and improving reading skills. It also introduces students to different cultures from Latin America and Spain, reflecting and learning about their heritage. This is the second course intended for native Spanish speakers with varying degrees of exposure to their native language. It focuses on vocabulary development, reading fluency, and grammatical rules. It also introduces students to different cultures from less known Latin American countries, developing their heritage, linguistic and cultural skills. The goal is to make them aware of the benefits of being bilingual and biliterate in today’s global environment.
